My name is Laura M. Bell and I have started this blog to tell a forgotten story about my Grandfather Dr. Alpha Omega Campbell. My grandfather was one of the first Black Doctors in Tallahassee, Florida. He built the first Black privately owned and operated hospitals. He served both Black , White, Rich and Poor.
One traumatic incident defined his life. I want to tell his forgotten story.
This article below gives an overview of the traumatic incident.
“Dr. A. O. Campbell found guilty of Manslaughter after 4 hrs and 15 mins. Of deliberation from and all white jury. The white mother of the 21 year old Jacksonville woman who died after treatment by Dr. Campbell was sitting in the front row. She listens with no change of expression.
A surprise witness from the defense attorney testified she heard a conversation while she was at Dr. Campbell’s Clinic. She heard the woman who died tell Dr. Campbell she had been to a white doctor’s office in Jacksonville that had aborted her. He told her that if she had any complications to go see Dr. Campbell in Tallahassee. This was not considered.”
Tallahasse, Demorcart, Feb. 3, 1956
After reading the file and the newspaper articles, the journey begins to try and clear my grandfather’s name.
I took a trip from Chicago, Ill.’s toTallahassee, Florida. This trip was the introduction to research and finding landmarks that defined my grandfather’s life.
Welcome to the Geneabloggers family. Hope you find the association fruitful; I sure do. I have found it most stimulating, especially some of the Daily Themes.
May you keep sharing your ancestor stories!

The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.
I really liked the article. It is always nice when you can not only be informed, but also entertained!

you’re a weekend warrior or just really like to tinker around the house you have no doubt heard the name Harbor Freight. It is the like of every single man along with the bane of every single woman to see her man go off on the weekend to acquire some far more tools he will by no means use.I guess it’s kinda like purses.. Harbor freight has a few of the very best prices around for tools plus the widest variety of tools offered, they publish sales fliers nearly weekly and have down to earth costs on everything from screwdrivers to 2 ton pallet jacks and everything in between.

2. Outstanding info once again. I am looking forward for your next post=)
I never knew there are so many international readers here…
1. Outstandingshare it is really. My girlfriend has been awaiting for this update.
Only constructive criticism I have for now is, it would be helpful to have a date at the top of your entry, for wayfarers like me who find the site months after its been initially posted. It took me some reading before I was able to figure out which season you were in.
its a cardinal sin to talk about santa cruz without mentioning the Saturn Cafe. $15 will get you the best burger youve ever had, tax/tip included. Coolest restaurant around, hands down.
Hi Allan,
Gotta have a lot of money to eat in this area.
Hi Robin,
Looks like a cute house. And Boulder Creek is a great little town. As for my recommending the house in text, Id have to see the place before I could do that. Right now Im in Dubai and wont be back till mid-December. But the next time Im en route to Santa Cruz, Ill stop off and take a look. Thanks for the heads-up!
Alright all of this stuff is great but Mendocino has can be great even if you dont want to spend alot of money. Youll find that the trails going to and from the beach are filled with some of the most interesting people youll ever meet everyone has a story to tell about where they came from and where they are going. Many of the homeless people you meet out there simply choose to be homeless because they feel its the only free way to live from the people Ive talked to many call it their home base when traveling. Every person I met treats you like family. A good place to meet some new people is the cafe around 10 er so the morning. The attitude is very much a everybodys family attitude
Great work and comprehensive. Love the copy and layout. Talent with attention to the homework. Good job.
Id suggest a hike on Sunday. Head to the top of Barker Pass Rd, a narrow, partially paved road that only locals know. The 7mi trip to the top takes you to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Though you can drive if you really want to, its best done on bicycles or on foot since there are hardly any cars on this hidden back road.

Hey, Jesse. Thanks for your insights on Davenport and the southern San Mateo coast. I love it there! You can read my write-up later this week. Sign up for the newsletter and youll get it first. Looking forward to crossing paths again soon! John
Thanks for your note, James! And if you stay at either of these places, let us all know what you think.
Next time Im in the valley, Ill drop by Gowans and reassess my review. Im all for supporting locals of all stripes (which is why I didnt single-out Gowans by name in my initial review), whether they believe in growing organically or not. But if Gowans fruit still doesnt taste as good as the Apple Farms, Ill stand by my initial assessment.
John add camping at pfieffer. I have not been there in years but it is a cheap alternative in a lovely area.
Happy to see this great part of California on the frontpage.
I would recommend the Foothill Cafe in Napa. It was closed for awhile but has re-opened. Its unpretentious and off the beaten track, in fact in a sort of weird location on Old Sonoma Road, heading west out of town, in a little nondescript shopping center. But the food and service are great. The locals always recommend this place, and I always take my out of town visitors there (I live in Napa). -Cath

Hi Britt,Youre right to stay at Mar VistaI cant say enough great things about that place. In stead of driving up to the heart of the redwoods, which actually lies way up north, beyond Eureka, you can get a taste of the big trees at Navarro Redwoods State Park, just south of Mendocino, but theyre second-growth trees. Still, its great fun to laze by the river, then go wine-tasting in the Anderson Valleyand its much closer to Mar Vista than the old-growth forests.
Hi, Bill. Thanks for the tip about Miramar. What a beautiful spot its in. I had actually meant to include the Saturday scene, but deadline demands require I write everything so fast that sometimes I omit placeswhich is why I rely on readers to chime in. Thanks for doing so! Ill likely update this section sometime next week. Stay tuned. Best regards, John
The Other Place & Long Valley Ranch are 2 separate ranches with 8 individual view houses spread over several hundred acres. The Other Place is located in Boonville in the Anderson Valley and Long Valley Ranch is on the Boonville-Ukiah road. 2 of the houses on Long Valley have 3-4 bedrooms & 2-3 bathrooms and make them ideal for family/ group vacation or getaway. All 8 houses have fully equipped kitchens, accept dogs & childern. They have great walking trails and ponds.
Thanks for your invitation to join you for a tour of Lake County. Im pretty familiar with Clear LakeIve covered it for Lonely Planetand Ive thought about covering it on 71Miles. But I have some misgivings about the destination in general, specifically about the meth problem on the southern end of the lake. I know, I knowthats Clearlake, the city (at the lakes southern endblech), not Clear Lake as a whole, which is really quite beautiful, especially around Upper Lake.
Hi, Laura Thanks for the kind words! Funny you should mention Fernwood. I realized a week or two ago that Id neglected to include it in my original reviews. Im going back to Big Sur in a month or so and will write about it then.

John, we are about to start planning a trip to the Carmel area for mid-March. Just wondering what the weather is like then. Also been on the VRBO looking for homes/cottages to rent and wonder if those in and near the downtown area are good or bad choicestoo busy, noisey, etc. if you have any advice there, Ill appreciate it! Love your info here on this site! MB
Some of the rooms could use a few upgrades and some new furniture, but theyre comfy and well-worn, like a favorite old cashmere sweater thats been patched at the elbows. I especially like the ocean-view rooms with fireplaces (but not all rooms have views). And if youre traveling with kids, the inn is more inviting to families than Stanford. A couple of drawbacks: there is no swimming pool. And youll have to drive to town; the inn sits a few miles south of the village, albeit in a gorgeous spot, on a bluff on the inland side of Hwy 1, overlooking the ocean. Still, not all rooms have water views, but you can hear the oceans room from most of them.
Hi Kristi,
Have a wonderful time! And let us know your thoughts, once youre back home.
Remember, there are three Sonomas: the town, the valley, and the county. If you decide youd like to see the valley and town instead of Healdsburg, start at the north end of the valley by taking Hwy 101 to Santa Rosa, then turning southeast on Hwy 12. Youll begin the day in Sonoma Valley, a rural area full of wineries, then end the day in the town of Sonoma, an hour or so from the city.
I was thinking of taking my gf to Mendocino in February to propose. Is this a bad idea at that time of year given the weather? What would your recommendation be for the most romantic place to stay? What is your opinion of Brewery Gulch Inn? It comes highly recommended on several other sites and looks pretty nice from their website but I didnt see any mention of it here. Any must-do or must-see places for such an occasion?
This is a very helpful site as my partner and I are planning to get married this summer and were looking into Pt. Reyes area. Do you have suggestions for a nice-but-not-too-nice place to hold a ceremony and reception? We would really like an outdoor ceremony and nice dinner to followThe Olema Inn is booked. I love the idea of people spending the weekend checking out the tide pools, birds, and stopping by the creamery! Thank you for all the tasty tidbits of information.
Great review! Wanted to add that Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has rooms available with kitchens and fireplaces. One of my favorite things to do is to go hiking all day (theres a great 8-mile loop at Andrew Molerago to the top of the hill under a big tree to eat cheese and drink wine, then go down to the beach for the return to the parking lot), then make good food and drink good wine back at the hotel. The rooms arent fancy, but its good for friends and families, you can get an extra bedroom, and its nice to clean off and jump in the pool before dinner.
The day trip to Carmel and Big Sur is l-o-n-g: Budget 16 hours. Ideally stay one night.
Hi Louisa,

My wife and I live in Prescott, Wi. and are in our early 40s. We are celebrating our 10th anniversary July 22nd. We have the luxury of traveling midweek and I would like to know if you can recommend a place or two for us. We plan to fly to San Francisco for a couple of days then rent a car and drive to Napa Valley. In Napa Valley, where would be a great place to stay where it is luxurious and has the best views and beautiful grounds? Do not care about the price. Room would have to have some sort of satellite or cable tv and possibly a deck with hot tub. We have never been here before or California for that matter. If you know of a place to stay in San Francisco that is beautiful and centralized so we do not have rent a car there, as Ive heard it is busy, that would be awesome. I would love to go to Alcatraz. My wife wants to go to San Frisco, Napa Valley and a drive on the coast. Could you recommend a route from San Francisco the coast To Napa Valley and back or San Fran to Napa then coast and back. In Napa my wife Im sure would love to shop and I would enjoy bar hopping or a limo tour of vineyards. Im a big drinker and my wife not so much so maybe it would be best to drive ourselves around to wineries and quant towns and shops? Kind of a lot but I would sure appreciate help from someone who sounds like he knows what he is talking about since we are true green horns at this and travel agents in Wisconsin are really lame. If you can help, it would be so much appreciated and would glady pay for your services.
The Seal Cove Inn, in Moss Beach, is ranked as one of the B&Bs in the country.
Also, it is a crazy idea to think we can visit 4-5 wineries driving up from Sonoma to Healdsburg in one day, then do a hot air balloon tour and stop at a few Napa wineries on the second day?
Sorry for my delay; Ive been on the road.
john-i recently viewed you on KRON and was intrigued by your service. while planning our trip to the sonoma coast, i knew we would visit many of the wine and food spots. when driving into occidental, i noticed the parking lot of the union hotel packed and remembered the many things i have heard of the restaurants in this town. my rand-mcnally showed it as one of the best spots and we decided to eat at the union hotel in spite of your review. i must say, this was one of the highlights of our vacation. we tried several foods, but the grilled portabello mushroom panini was heaven! we found the pasta cooked to perfection and sauce very delicious. im not sure how you came to your conclusion? i just want to show a different view of this great town and delightful restaurant. i must agree with the response from your reader, jenny. this place does have history and a soul.

I agree that the walk along the coast from Lovers Point in Pacific Grove is not to be beat. Theres good places to explore the tide pools if you take the path all the way around the peninsula tip to the Asilomar side (or drive). Love the pure white sand at Asilomar beach.
As for your query about where to explore this spring, I think you should stick to the NorCal coast. Tahoe in winter is pretty much limited to snow sports. But before I make an concrete suggestions, tell me: do you like snow? If not, Ill make a few good suggestions for the North Coast. Have you been to Redwood National Park?
Hi Irina,
Heres what I recommend. Go to the North Coast, and stay close to Hwy 1 and Hwy 101. Forget about Tahoe. Its the Emerald Month in California, and up and down the state the hills are electric green. The wildflowers are starting to pop. Youll love it.
If you ever have a question about when something was posted, save yourself the trouble in the future and simply drop me a note. Ill be happy to answer any queries about seasonality. Thanks for reading!
Like your website, I check for updates pretty regularly. My husband and I and some friends will be staying at your recommendation Tahoma Meadows in February for a ski trip. Our skill level ranges from complete novice to early intermediate. Is Homewood the way to go (we plan to ski for 2-3 days)? In addition, do you recommend any ski shops near the B&B for ski rentals? Thanks ahead for your input!
Hi, Jim. Thanks for your note! I intentionally left out the DuChamp. Yes, the finishes (i.e., fabrics and furnishings) are cushyyoull surely be comfortable if you stay hereand the place looks great, if a bit stark. But truth be told, I have misgivings about the tone of the service: its not pretentious, like Les Mars, but it is a tad stuffy and occasionally haughty. They really push the idea of being exclusive. Remember, Healdsburg is ultimately an ag town, and this place feels out of step with the local culture, which is remarkably inclusive. Thus my decision not to cover it. Please understand, I do NOT hate the hotel, but neither do I love it.
Alexanders, our oceanfront restaurant, offer local ingredients and a new wine list that features only the very best Sonoma Coast wineries such as Hirsch, Flowers, and Wild Hog.
Thanks for the nice note. Alas, I dont have any specific recommendations in Tahoe. Im not doing vacation rental tie-ins anymore. But I would definitely recommend the west shore, somewhere in Tahoe City or south to the Homewood area. Lovely!
Hi, Gina. Thanks for your note! The restaurant is actually over the water, not a valley. Its called Sierra Mar, and is the dining room at the Post Ranch Inn. You can read about it in our Big Sur guide. Note: Its wicked expensive, so save it for a special occasion. Let me know what you think of it! John
Sincerely,
71Miles means a lot of things. Its amorphous. Originally we based it on Healdsburg, our first destination, which is 71 miles from my house. Then the founder of the site, Adam Rugel, pointed out that he was born in 1971. Now, someone just told me that the circumference of Lake Tahoe is 71mi, which I had always known to be 72mi, but whos counting, really?
The next day, head north on Hwy 1, till it cuts inland and rejoins Hwy 101. Head for the Requa Inn, a former logging hotel turned BB, smack dab in the middle of Redwood National Park, high on the bluffs above the mouth of the Klamath River. Gorgeous.
Im surprised you didnt mention the Heritage House. It has been renovated since being the spot where same time next year was filmed and is now an Adrian Zecha, GHM hotel.
Now Im lusting over Napa. MUST go and see for myself (and take late-night hearthrob Twitter-guide with me, at least virtually!).
By the way, do you know about Mar Vista Cottages on the Sonoma-Mendocino coast? Its my favorite place to stay in the entire state, and it allows dogs (by reservation only). JV
Leave SF and head toward the Anderson Valley. (Take Hwy 101 north to Cloverdale, then jut northwest on Hwy 128.) Stay one night in Mendocino; the best place for dinner is in nearby Fort Bragg: the Rendezvous Cafe. (See the Mendocino page.) Make sure you leave at least two daylight hours to explore the village of Mendo.
When you have a chance take a look at the new Oceano Hotel & Spa by the Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay. They are close to Cafe Gibraltar. By the way, I am not sure but Rogue Chefs is still open.
[Diane wrote:]You left out the absolutely best restaurant in town: Rogue Chefs!!! Shame on you!
The towns south of HMB, San Gregorio (home to the funkiest general store in California) and Pescadero have loads to offer.
Love the website! I have a similar question as Nicoles, but I wanted more winery recommendations in Sonoma. I am going up with a few friends (all recent grads) during Memorial Day weekend and this is our first time wine tasting in California. We are staying in Tiburon so we were planning to split our time between the city and Sonoma. We wanted to devote one day to the wineries. Which would be the best day to go? Also, for this time, we dont want to venture too far away from the Sonoma square (within 10 -15 miles) but we wanted to get the best taste of the region. Is there a winery you would suggest to have a picnic lunch? Lastly, since Im sure its going to be mobbed that weekend, is there a good way to get from winery to winery? Someone suggested taxis; is it easy to get to wineries by taxi or (if were responsible) would it be easier just to go by car?
Not many restaurants have that longevity, and there is a reason the Union Hotel in Occidental does. Not only is the food always savory, but the Union Hotel is deeply family and community oriented. So my recommendation to you is this: Go back to the Union with all this in mind. Have Barbara seat you on the front patio, where the fountain is flowing, the birds are singing, and the sun is dappled. Order a bruschetta, and a glass of wine to start. Dont worry about the time. Just sit back, relax, and let the ambience of the Union Hotel work its magic. You have just found yourself a quiet corner in an otherwise chaotic world!! Enjoy.
Youll be thrilled to know that were upgrading our sheets starting next week (and new towels are finally on order). And we prefer eccentric to erratic when describing our service quality.
Hope that helps. Im off to Morocco in a couple of days and will have no internet access. Fingers crossed that Ive answered your query satisfactorily.
Hi Bill,
Ive lived in Mendocino for some years now, and this is a pretty good of Mendocino. The one major quibble I have with this article is this line:God forbid you ever need an ambulance in this town. This is flat-out wrong the village of Mendocino has an amazing volunteer fire department. All of them are trained as EMTs, as well as in cliff and water rescues.
You can indeed subscribe to updates. Look under the navigation bar, on the left-hand-side of the page, up near the top. Ill be adding more destinations to the site in the coming weeksSanta Cruz, Napa, Sonoma, and many more.
As for the union hotel, it has great food but you have to be the type of person who likes that type of food..i worked there for a year and would eat the left overs off peoples plates as i cleaned the tables ahahah..its that good..they may have canned kidney beans..but where do you get fresh kidney beans in sonoma county?they do have hand rolled raviolees, great pizza and hand made deserts..overalll id say its probbly the best restuarant in OCD.
Everyone else: Listen to Laura! Shes spot-on.
Sooo sorry for the delay in responding. Ive been overseas.
[Diane wrote:]You left out the absolutely best restaurant in town: Rogue Chefs!!! Shame on you!
I respectfully disagree.
I must say, residents of HMB are the most involved bunch of readers Ive had. I LOVE your passion!
For the record, when I wrote that Monterey is not a food town: there’s not a single real destination restaurant in town, I was referring to the city of Monterey, not the entire peninsula. Indeed, there are several good places to eat in PG and Carmel, but really, Monterey itself is not a culinary destination.

Thanks so much. Great stuff. Ive added a note about reservations to my review of Avanti. Will check out the bowling alley and Bettys Burgers on my next visit. I owe you a beer for your excellent research!
As for the restaurants, I do a lot of eating, but since I cant sit down for a full dinner at every restaurant over the course of a couple of days, I sample appetizers and talk to LOTS of locals to get their favorite picks. And I roam through every restaurant, peering over diners shoulders. I can say with confidence that I really know whats happening on the ground. And the table.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Duarte’s Tavern was a bit of a letdown. I didn’t find the Artichoke Soup to be anything to write home about. But I did really like the burritto gas station. Best bet for those on a budget wanting to brush up on their Spanish.
Im charmed! Happy to serve as your guide. John
Enjoyed this site so much! Very helpful information and right on the money as well. There is nothing better after a day of stress than to head on down to Pacific Ave. to walk, window shop, stop and listen to the street music, say hello to the umbrellaman or hike for 5 minutes to that great rollercoaster at the beach!Should any of your website visitors ever decide to stay and live here and find they have the need for a Realtor with a great reputation that knows the area like the back of his hand, Im their man!
Im wondering if you have any suggestions for smaller, by-appointment wineries that specialize in Petit Syrah, Zinfandel, Mataro, Barbera, or Sangiovese? Ill be there for a few days, and would love to visit places in that venture away from the traditional cabernet/merlot production. Although Im posting this in the Napa Valley section, Im more than willing to travel outside of Napa!
Great site so informative and thorough. We are planning a day trip with some out of town family during Thanksgiving weekend. Im hoping it wont be too crowded

Regardless of the August crowds or the winter storms, you are probably safer here than in a big city.
Others:Silverado Resort (may have moderate rates; wouldnt hurt to check)Rancho Caymus Inn (in Rutherford, I think)

A note: the Malabar and the cold-kitchen Asian Rose (same owner) both closed, but theres a little more upscale new Asian Rose on Front Street. Same inexpensive and delicious food, but its no longer the cafeteria-line style lunch service it was before.
The oversight was intentional: the previous owners screwed up the property. They fired the long-time staff, gutted some of the resorts cool architectural details, raised the rates sky-high, andin my opinionstripped the Heritage House of its heritage. Then they sold it.

A day trip to Napa from SF is more feasible. Leave at 8am or 9am, arrive there by 11am. Have lunch, hit no more than three wineries (spit, dont swallow, or be burned out by 3pm), have an early dinner at 5:30, then return to SF by 9pm.

John, Your Review on the Union was RIGHT on. Good for you for reporting the truth!
Good-oh on the new enterprise! And with roughly 6 million-plus potential readers in the greater Bay Area, I think youll have a large number of fans.

As for walking-trail maps, download maps from the Point Reyes National Seashore. (But Id suggest you purchase a copy of the excellent Tom Harrison map of Pt Reyes.) Online, theres a south map and a north map. The southern map shows wonderful walks along from the Palomar trailhead in Bolinas. From here, take the Coast Trail, but youll likely have to camp if you take this route. Otherwise, take the Olema Valley Trail for a long days walk from Bolinas.
As for the raviolees [sic], look up al dente (as well as sic) in a good dictionary. And dont even get me started about how to cook proper pastry.
Do you know of any rental homes or cottages with views of the beach in Carmel for 8 adults. I love La Playa but need room for my kids and spouses or maybe 2 rooms that sleep 4 each, but only for 3-4 nights.

A semen analysis evaluates some characteristics of a male’s semen and the amount of sperm contained in the semen. It may be done while investigating a couple’s infertility problems or maybe after a vasectomy to verify that the procedure was successful. It is also used for testing donors for semen donation. Lately it is really possible to create more ejaculation fluid with completely safe and natural ways including buying online herbal pills from the many Internet stores. Ejaculation liquid is the measurement of sperm concentration of sperms in our seminal fluid. A variety of factors are taken into account to really measure the sperm count of a man such as the actual length of time between ejaculations, semen sample analysis, how the sample is kept when being transported to the lab. Pills for more semen volume is by far the most awesome natural and herbal invented formula that will in no time improve the volume of semen ejaculation liquid by up to 500%. The highly well-known natural pill has ancient American herbs, minerals and vitamins.

In order to grow to be effective within the penny stock industry you ought to treat your investing like a company. You need to take the time to do your due diligence and you need to realize the risks. Penny stock investing is quite risky however it can also be very profitable. The key to success is finding a method to limit your risk. I suggest creating your own list of penny stocks.

I read somewhere that the average cost of a 30sec ad spot is around 300k, for that reason I would think that spending far less to get youtube style video that people want to watch is well worth the investment. If the prize money is 5k, do you know what the total cost to the client is?

Many bloggers are great leader; especially lead their own blog to become the most popular blog in the world. I wonder what you think about this. Many successful bloggers created or made jobs for other people. It is wise idea, I think. We agree that you can become this too. By commenting on your blog, I trust you because I had “blog-walked†to your blog intensively, especially see and check your analysis. It is fantastic! Wonderful thought that you gave to other readers, share the biggest idea, unique thought, and then debate them. For me as learner, it is the most important thing to you and us. I have spent many times, from time to come, and I am sure this is the right time to me to recruit you as a writer, hope you are responsible to your future job. Get two plants, and set both of them in two different locations. One plant should be put in a box with a light so it can grow. The other plant should be put in a dark box so it will not grow.
Thank You for the greet page, I loved reading it!

Personally I’m impressed by the quality of this. Sometimes I fav stuff like this on Redit. This article probably won’t do well with that crowd. I’ll look around and find another article that may work.
I really enjoy reading your blog, it is actually one of the highlights of my week. I particularly enjoy reading it during my lunch hour.

It’s laborious to find knowledgeable individuals on this subject, but you sound like you already know what you’re speaking about! Thanks accesorii
This is definitely an impressive blog. I discovered the site while I was attempting to solve another problem. Your internet site is absolutely worthy of the bookmark and i’m sure it’ll be useful in the future.
If you really want you can look the other way and not talk about it. The real truth comes with being honest with yourself and your goals. Generally this will lead to a mistaken and unproductive life.

I’m using Internet Explorer at the moment and your navigation bar looks really screwed up. It might be because I’m using an older version, but I thought you should know. It would be a shame if people couldn’t navigate your site due to it not being compatible with their browsers.

The next time I read a website, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

Would you be occupied with exchanging hyperlinks?
I guess your RSS feed is not functional cause it just gives me a web page of strange characters, would the problem be on my end?

This is a good subject to talk about. Sometimes I fav stuff like this on Redit. This article probably won’t do well with that crowd. I’ll take a look around your site though and submit something else.
I like your site but there seems to be an awful lot of garbage comments on this page that make no sense.
Is there any way that I can join this author’s fan club? Someone please e-mail me if you know how.
Wow some of the info of this post is news to me.thank you for updating me.
Great post & Fantastic blog! I would definitely love to begin a blog too but I have no clue where to begin. I possess the ability to do it (not that challenging on the technical part) but I really feel like I am too lazy to post regularly. That is the problem, if you start you have to go all the way. However blogs like yours inspire me to have a go at it.
contributed to the topics make myself stop reading intriguing . posted some really good info to everyone
Really? You didnt like Calistoga? Then I dare say you wont like Napa.
Random question: I know you are using WordPress for this blog, but have you tried any other platforms? I am trying to decide whether to use WordPress or BlogEngine and I ask because I like yours.
You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with
your blog.
Seo wants a very good search engine optimizer plan. Just one of these methods can make a giant distinction in your websites position and firm your web site brings you.

Big Sur is my favorite place Ive ever traveled to. Its the only place where you can get acrophobia sitting down. Its magical. And I should probably stop writing so that theres a room available the next time I want to visit.
Great work and comprehensive. Love the copy and layout. Talent with attention to the homework. Good job.
Happy anniversary!
Worth a stop on your way through the valley.
If you do get a room at Les Petites Maison, consider exploring Bartholomew Park and its moderately easy, wooded walking trails. Trails are harder at Jack London, but B. Park is just up the road a piece from Les Petites Maisons.
I only know of Slates Hot Springs (@Esalen) and Sykes Hot Springs (deep in the Ventana Wilderness), as well as Tassajara (a developed hot springs area), which is east of Big Sur, in the mountains in a Buddhist monastery. Ive only read of these few places, as the area doesnt seem as blessed with hot springs like other parts of CA
Thanks for the note. As for post dates, we had a little glitch with the site that shifted dates around. Were working on it!
As for house rentals, technically theyre not allowed in Big Sur. But you can ask realtors if they know of anyone who has any rental properties. I shouldnt say more than that. Plan ahead and youll have good luck, I think.
Hi, Love your travel tips, such a great web-site..THANKS.
One thing about the park. As you drive north on Hwy 101, after Hwy 1 cuts inland at Leggett, take two parallel detours: the Avenue of the Giants and the Newton B. Drury Parkway. Both are winding two-lane routes that run right beneath the giant trees. These add no time to your trip, but will add much to the aesthetic of it.
Wifes 40th is next year and want to plan something large-ish.
We stayed at Indian Springs once and might choose that place again just because of the pool. But Calistoga itself is such a drag!
Hi Michael,
By the way otherwise love your site as someone in the wine country looking for somewhere else to go in the Bay Area, it is perfect Thanks

Austins across the street from the Hyatt offers lunch and dinner -good food at a reasonable price. Be sure to order a side of buttermilk fries!
NB: Next weekend the forecast calls for rain. Bear this in mind as you make your decision. Oh, and thanks for the heads-up about the videos. Were sorting out the problem.
Thanks for bringing Glendeven to my attention. I initially excluded it from my report because there was talk of it closing, or being taken over by someone else, or some such thing I can no longer remember.
Thanks for your thoughtful note and excellent advice. Very helpful indeed.
I am from the San Francisco area and my girlfriend who had a knee operation and I are thinking Carmel or Mendicino. We are thinking mid April 2009. My girlfriend likes jacuzzis in the room. She likes to shop but also likes a good Manhatten and Seafood. We dont want to spend a fortune. I like Pinot and we have been to Elk in Mendocino and did enjoy Anderson Valley.

Hi, Dawn. There are indeed many places around Arizona worth covering. For now, though, were sticking to major metro areas. Weve talked about adding the Phoenix-Scottsdale-Flagstaff area to the site, but only once weve added other areas like SoCal, New York, Boston, etc. Stay tuned! John
Thanks for your note, James! And if you stay at either of these places, let us all know what you think.
If anyone else wants to eat there and report back, heres the location on Google Maps. Let us know what you think!
Have you ever been to the Old World Inn in Napa? Im looking for a moderately priced place to stay in the area.
I am the General Manger of the recently-purchased and renovated Timber Cove Inn. After a 2.5 million upgrade, the raccoons have returned to nature, we have remodeled the rooms, and we have added hiking trails and an events lawn overlooking the spectacular Sonoma Coast.

From what I understand, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe is one of the Pritzker familys pet projects (the Pritzkers are the family that owns Hyatt), which accounts for the quality of furnishings and servicethis aint no airport Hyatt!
Ive never seen the cold-water warning signs, but would like to . I l-o-v-e cautionary signs written by alarmist thinkers at tourist sites. Next time you see one (such as the ones on the rocky coast near the Golden Gate Bridge, which say: Warning! People have been swept from these rocks and drowned), take a picture and send it to us! John
Nice websiteI know you listed your favorites here and it sounds like Costanoa is one possibility butare there other mixed-use type facilities that you know of that would allow for a large group (say 50 or so?) to have the choice of either camping OR staying in a room (doesnt have to be luxurious) and also dining facilities for a planned dinner? I could even get it cateredmore important is beautiful venue and choice for guests to rough it or sleep with walls.
Though local residents see them as inseparable, I chose to break out HMB from the rest of the San Mateo Coast so that I could also write a guide dedicated to the lesser-known places around Half Moon Bay, spots on the SM Coast that few people know about. (The intro says, Our guide to the rest of the San Mateo Coast is coming next week. Stay tuned.)
I saw you on Channel 4 today. What a great web site. I greww up here and gee there is so much I did not know. I have a suggestion. We like to travel with our teo elderly dogs. Can you add inns that allow pets. THis would be especially nice for the Sonoma and Medocino coasts since we have not traveled there very muchThanks
I love Pescaderoand if your aunt and uncle are Rob and Cotton of the Pescadero Creekside Barn, theyre fantastic people and they run a great inn, one of my favorites. Keep me posted if you need any travel tips. And thanks for reading!

[My response:]Hi Diane,
As for hiring the boat, maybe the innkeeper can talk to some locals for you. Again, Im waiting to hear back. Otherwise, I have a friend who lives in town and I can call him to inquire. A boat is definitely your best bet for shaving off that long walk on Hwy 1.
Hi Robin,
You wrote: Theyalso have lots of new items on the menu which are the current demands at today’s trendy restuarants. This is at the heart of why I have trouble with the Union: they do not keep up with some of the fundamental basics of the contemporary culinary scene. Again, three words: canned kidney beans.
Do you have any suggested routes for walking (preferably on trails) and staying at B & Bs, motels, inns or hotels in West Marin? The best I can figure out so far is Mountain Home to Muir Beach (Pelican Inn), to Stinson or Bolinas (IS there any place to stay in Bolinas???maybe not), to Olema thence to Pt. Reyes Station or beyond. Im trying to keep the mileage down below 12 a day. Problem isdo we have to hike on the road or are there trails? If so, where can I find relevant maps.
What a great run down of Big Sur! I have an enhanced fervor to check it out more thoroughly now
As a resident of the area in question.. IMHO It can be quiet often downright boring. The low-density of people is ultimately wonderful When one travels elsewhere near or far away it is always a gift to return home
CLIMATE ALERTPack those hoodies, and layer it it rarely gets warm unless you are a few miles inland..!! Many people find the roads carsick-inducing Take your time and let people pass you who are so inclined..
-Ciao Bella in Felton is a great little restaurant with a BDSM bartender.
James
I also like the Farmhouse, especially the little detached hideaway cottage out backvery private and oh-so cute. The only drawback about the Farmhouse is that you have to drive to town. But if you like to get away from civilization, its a great pick.
The town of Carmel is about 45 minutes by car from Esalen. Check out my reviews of places to stay there, if youre willing to drive that far after getting a rubdown.
Why dont you cover Fort Bragg in this? Its not charming like Mendocino, but its certainly the place to stay on the coast just above Mendocino if you cant afford Mendo. Theres also the wonderful Botanical Garden, as well as several good restaurants.
When my mother was a nurse, she had a colleague who used to eat leftovers off hospital patients plates. The woman got TBwhich I hear is going around again. You might want to be careful in future.

Thanks for the tip on Brock Farm. Im due for a visit, but should probably wait till strawberry season. Nothing like sweet, ripe organic berries still warm from the sun. Youve got me longing for spring!
JohnThanks for recognizing, and clearly demonstrating, that Calistoga is unique in the Napa Valley. Thanks also for mentioning Brannan Cottage Inn and highlighting some of the local attractions. Two or three suggestions for inclusion/expansion of your review:1. The Sharpsteen Museum (downtown, next to Police Station) has a wonderful permanent diorama of Calistoga in the 1870s, a restored Brannan Cottage, and very professional displays of amazing Calistoga stufffree (donations gladly accepted), open 11-4 every day.2. Consider trying some of our restaurants againFlat Iron Grill for comfort food, Bar Vino for tapas and modern Italian paired with local, unique wineries.3. Mention that Calistoga is approximately 25 miles (45 minutes) from Napa, and an equal distance from surrounding (less expensive, more varied) wine tasting areas in Sonoma Valley, Russion River Valley, Alexander Valley, and Lake County. As the Chamber of Commerce says, Calistoga is at the top of wine country.
As for a picnic, Gundlach-Bundschu has the most dramatic grounds, very castle-like. And its bikeable from downtown. Read more details on picnicking in Sonoma.
How wonderful! So glad you had a good time on the Sonoma Coast. Pretty amazing, isnt it?

Thats a tough question. I actually most love Mar Vista Cottages, but its 45 minutes south on the Mendo-Sonoma line. Check out my review on the Sonoma-Mendocino Coast page.
John, thanks for the detailed coverage of the entire Tahoe region (in this and other posts on 71miles). Id love to get your take on the mammoth area, which, tho 100 miles farther from SF, is remarkable for its terrain, snow quality, and views. IMO, Kirkwood is kind of a gateway drug for Mammoth.
Best,Cheri

For the record, when I wrote that Monterey is not a food town: there’s not a single real destination restaurant in town, I was referring to the city of Monterey, not the entire peninsula. Indeed, there are several good places to eat in PG and Carmel, but really, Monterey itself is not a culinary destination.
Thats a tough question. I actually most love Mar Vista Cottages, but its 45 minutes south on the Mendo-Sonoma line. Check out my review on the Sonoma-Mendocino Coast page.
KV: Have you contacted the Audubon Canyon Ranch? Im not sure theyre set up for catering, but its in a gorgeous spot. What about Olema Druids Hall? They have a big backyard. And then theres the park itself. Not sure what the policy of the parks service is on private functions, but you might check on it. Otherwise, consider the Marin Headlands. I went to a great wedding on Rodeo Beach; the reception was in one of those nearby rickety old wooden military buildings. Casual, fun, festive, and earthy. Not sure who youd call, but start with the Headlands Center for the Arts, and ask them who rents out those buildings. (Phew! My years as a luxury-hotel concierge continue to pay off) JV
All the best,
And John, that drive from the barn to the San Gregorio General Store through Stage Coach road, it was unbelievably cool. I’m gonna comb through your site to find more cool backroads to travel within a 100 mile radius of where I live. Thanks so much.
Hi John! A friend just introduced me to your great and informative site. Im so delighted that you have found so much to enjoy about Mendocino and the surrounding area! Next time youre here, please come by my gallery, The World of Suzi Long, in an 1852 watertower on Albion Street, and Ill give you a free watercolor sketching class that I offer for $35. Its only 90 minutes, but full of instruction on perspective, contour drawing and color mixing. Its also offered 4 days a week to be convenient for visitors to just drop in at 10 a.m. And its loads of fun! Do come say hi! Youre pretty cute! xoxo suzi
Hello All,
Thanks, Hilarie. You can write me a letter anytime you want. And if you ever have feedback to share, fire away.
WELL JOHN..FORGIVE MY OVER SIGHT!! IF I WOULD HAVE READ YOUR ARTICLE COMPLETELY, I WOULD HAVE SEEN YOUR COMMENTS RE: INN @OCCIDENTAL. HAVE READ NOW, SO THANKS AND DISREGARD MY PREVIOUS QUESTIONS. THANKS
Thank You,
John, I grew up in Occidental when the elementary school was at the north of town. We rode our horses to school and put them in the pasture next to the big red church. I have lived away for 30 years, but when I go home to my mothers I always walk to town. Occidental is always the same and a welcoming familiarity. I really enjoyed reading your article and look forward to my next visit.
Have you ever been to the Old World Inn in Napa? Im looking for a moderately priced place to stay in the area.
Hi Kris,Take a look at the comment directly above yours; coincidentally enough, it lists the three places in HMB that allow dogs. Funny, so many readers want to take their pups to HMB!

Hey John,My fiancee and I are planning to travel to SF and then drive up Hwy 1 and stay a few nights along the way for our honeymoon. So far we’ve booked our first two nights at the Pelican Inn and will probably book two more at Mar Vista. We were planning to stay at the Pelican and then go up somewhere around Mendocino to stay for a night before going all the way up to Redwood National Park, but I’m starting to rethink that since we’ve found Mar Vista. Is Humboldt State Park comparable to the National Park? Or is there some other Redwoods site closer to Mar Vista that is comparable? We’re planning to do 5 nights up the coast and then another 3 in the city. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks.Britt Norvell

Hi Louisa,
Happy to see this great part of California on the frontpage.
You forgot to mention Em Les Restaurant in Carmel, CA. They have the best breakfast, and I eat there every time I visit. I think its the best place to eat in Carmel for budget conscious people. I really like your advice on some of the other activities such as 17 mile drive though.
I wish you all the best with this great initiative!
Great site. Great for locals and visitors. Why didnt you include SF? Id love to find a site like this for locals for places to see and things to do in and around the city.
By the way otherwise love your site as someone in the wine country looking for somewhere else to go in the Bay Area, it is perfect Thanks
Youll be thrilled to know that were upgrading our sheets starting next week (and new towels are finally on order). And we prefer eccentric to erratic when describing our service quality.
Hi Louie,
Wishing them many more years of success.
As a resident of Half Moon Bay, actually Moss Beach, up by the airport, I must say that you missed much of what the area has to offer. For example, by far the best restaurant on the coast is Cafe Gibraltar in Ed Granda (near the harbor). Although the Moss Beach Distillery is not my favorite restaurant, and is a bit touristy, it is one of the most interesting venues on the coast. It used to be bordello around the turn of the century (the last one) and locals swear it is inhabited by ghosts.
Every restaurant has good and bad days, but I never have heard of a customer going away from the Union Hotel not satisfied with their meal. I have been going to Occidental and the Union Hotel since I was a little kid. Lots of restaurants in this town have come and gone, but the Union Hotel has been around for over 100 years. They must be doing something right. People need roots of past traditions and memories of the good old days, but this is not enough to keep a restaurant in business. The important thing is the cuisine and the service. This is where the Union Hotel excels in serving great food all of the time and the servers are always friendly and courteous. They serve the tradtional menus from the past, but also have lots of new items on the menu which are the current demands at todays trendy restuarants. They are always booked for Easter and Mothers Day Brunches and New Years Eve. Many families come to celebrate Anniversarys, Birthdays and many weddings.
Hello John,
And their service was friendly but very harried. Although the meal took 2.5 hours, I felt a little rushed because the cooks and waitstaff were rushing everywhere.
(Please tell me that your letter is a fabulous prank. Really, it was delicious to read and perfectly makes my case about the Union Hotels kitchen. And the OCD closer? Brilliant! Thank you.)
[My response:]Hi Diane,
Thats about it. Just found your site today while looking for romantic hotels in Nor Cal and LOVE it -Stephanie
Though I intended it to be metaphoric, there is some truth to my statement, God forbid you ever need an ambulance in this town. If I were ever to endure a serious head trauma, Id much rather it happen in SF, where Id be whisked via ambulance to San Francisco General Hospitals trauma unit, one of the top three in America. Id not want to waste time in a helicopter bound for Santa Rosa. Thank God head traumas are rarer than heart attacks.
Great site. Found you on Matt Mullenwegs WordPress blog.
Hi Laurie,
Hi Cindy,
Saw you on Ch 4 today. Great interview. Looking forward to visiting your website more often now that I know about you. Thanks
And John, that drive from the barn to the San Gregorio General Store through Stage Coach road, it was unbelievably cool. I’m gonna comb through your site to find more cool backroads to travel within a 100 mile radius of where I live. Thanks so much.
I cry foul! You give some great suggestions but your judgement is a bit harsh in the snob aspect. Our snob factor is usually imported by the bay area foodies and wine geeks who move here to try and get the inside track on what will be the next trend in the city. They land a job at a tasting room for the inner-winery discount and usually do not last long with thier name dropping and attitudes. As for the $20.00 tastings, most are waved with a purchase and many are simply forgotten if the staff has a good time or you appreciate the wine. Avoid the big names and SR 29 during the summer but cruise the Silverado Trail and enjoy places with smaller crowds. Finally, have a seat at the bar of restaurants that serve large local crowds like Bounty Hunter in Napa, Hurleys and Bistro Jeanty in Yountville and the Martini House and Cindys Back-street Kitchen in St. Helena. Ask the locals where to go. You just might end up barrel tasting your night away in their or a friends cellar! As for Tahoe, check the Tahoe City, Incline Village, and South Lake Tahoe pages of the site (see the navigation bar at the top of the page on the left-hand side). I particularly like Tahoma Meadows Cottages, listed in the Tahoe City section.

-Cath

Hello Lauren,
Rebecca is right (hi Rebecca), there are lots of good restaurants in the area, but I agree with you that nothing is mind blowing, except maybe Fresh Cream. Hulas is fun and they have creative food. Our favorite restaurant in PG is Peppers pretty unique and fresh Mexican food. Thai Bistro II in PG is really fantastic and for local sushi (so you dont have to treck over to Carmel) is Crystalfish on Lighthouse in New Monterey. I also have to say that Matteos the restaurant Rebecca mentioned above is excellent. Ive eaten there a few times for special occastions ($$-$$$$) and nothing has disappointed. Happy restaurant hunting,Jennifer L
Hi, Janet I intentionally left out most campgrounds, but I agree: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a great spot to camp. Got any other favorites? Let us know! John
Thanks for the kind words. Tahoma Meadows is a great choice, as is Homewood. The innkeepers, Dick and Uli, will tell you frankly about conditions at the mountain; check with them before you arrive. Homewood is lower in elevation than the bigger mountains, so if theres been a recent warm-up, they can lost a lot of snow fast. Again, check with Dick and Uli.
Lucky for me, I stumbled upon this site! I am trying to find the ideal place for my honeymoon this October. Were narrowing in on Carneros or Hotel Healdsburg. A preference between the two hotels/areas?
We live in an exciting period in culinary history. As a writer, I have an obligation to a broad audience of readers, some of whom plan entire trips around where theyre going to eat. Simply put, the Union isnt for everyone, and Id be remiss not to point out why.
Sorry for my delay; Ive been on the road.
On the southwest shore near Konocti, the Ferndale resort has been reopened with a couple of guys from Marin. They have a little waterfront cafe that, while pricy, is probably the best food available on the lake. Fresh seafood, oysters, pasta dishes equistitely executed. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
BTW, I must take exception about the negative comments mentioned earlier about Clearlake. If one actually lives in and around the southern end of the lake, in particular Clearlake or Clearlake Park, as I have since 1998, I can say that the drug issue is no worse here than most other places.
Hey Ruben,Thanks for the suggestion. I googled this restaurant and see it on the map youre spot on with your improbably fantastic location. Ill have to check it out next time I meander up north.
You pose a hard question. It really comes down to what you want to do. If youre most interested in holing up in your room, then Id say go to Occidental. It has a lovely Shangri-La feel to itvery far removed from civilization. Healdsburg is a better choice if you want something more active. You can hit a few wineries, then walk around the Plaza to sample goodies from the local gourmet groceries. As for Sonoma, well, I love Beltane Ranch. Check it out on the Sonoma page of the site. Staying in town is also fun because you can walk around, and of the three destinations, its the closest to the city.
Thanks!Stephany
Thanks again for your note. Really, youre a damn good writer.
Just wanted to let you know about a couple of our favorite spots in the area, namely the restaurant 955 Ukiah and the Mendocino Farmhouse B&B. We thought 955 had a great menu, and have had a great meal every time we went. Weve always stayed at the Farmhouse, and have loved it. The innkeeper, Margie, is wonderful and makes a top-notch breakfast. In fact, my wife and I were married there in 2005 and well never forget it. The Farmhouse is nestled back off the coast in a redwood forest, so you get a nice variety of scenery all around you.
And insofar as I know, the hotel scene remains unchanged. Still, Id ask the front desk, at any hotel youre considering, the last time they got new mattresses.
Thanks again, Joel. Keep me posted of any other finds.
As for Brewery Gulch Inn, its a nice place, to be sure, but I have misgivings about how they built it. From what I understand, they hauled salvaged wood from a stream bed, effectively screwing up a salmon-spawning ground. And its in the woods, not by the sea. But they have good beds and high-quality linens. Still, its not my favorite.
I also recommend Nepenthe for lunch for overpriced burgers, a basket of fries to share and martinis.

If you go to the wild flour bakery, the sticky buns are absolutely phenomenal. Gooey, Nutty and Doughy, Ill sometimes drive up there just for the sticky buns, with every intention of bringing them home for breakfast. One of them always falls victim to my impatience on the drive home because I simply cant resist eating it if its there in the car next to me.

Pick one direction or the other: the far north coast or Big Sur. If you stay in SF, you can see Muir Woods, but its not entirely the same thing as the empty forests of the far north. Too many tourists. Arrive early or late at Muir if you choose this option, then go to Big Sur.
Indeed, Nanette. Its owned by the same folks who have the Philo Apple Farm (see See Do, above). Theyve got a great collection of random country furnishings, as well as jams and preserves from the farm. Personally, I find the preserves a touch too sugary, but the chutneys are out of this world! Thanks for writing. See you on the road! John

Hi John-We are planning on being in Sonoma for 4 nights in may and I thought it would be nice to stay in 2 different towns. I was thinking Headelsburg and Forestville, but now I am wondering if that doesnt make sense. I liked Forestville, because I thought we could spend time in the redwoods and maybe take a ride to the coast along with the wineries. Do you suggest we stay in Sonoma or Glen Ellen instead of Headelsburg and then stay in Forestville (Farmhouse Inn)? Or should we not stay in Forestville at all? Appreciate your suggestions for a 4 night stay.
Make reservations! Otherwise you may have a wait. The place has become very popular. Large seating area.
The Union Hotel is a wonderful place and I know so many people that just drive up to Occidental for the day to enjoy a wonderful meal at the Union Hotel.

Thanks, Nadia. I know, I knowOld Faithful is kinda tired, but its such a wonderfully old-school roadside attraction that I just love it. So kitsch! And the petting zoo is cute, cute, cute.
One more thing: Travel writers never include everything, which is why I occasionally leave things out, but maybe I should reconsider this posture.
I lived in Santa Cruz for 14 years, up until last August.
The reason I didnt initially choose to include the Little River Inn is its placement. Though Ill probably add it this fall, I initially wanted to stay focused on those places nearer the village.
When I wrote frozen and canned food, I was referring to a specific American-culinary viewpoint that is anachronistic on todays food scene. As a classically trained chef, I have a responsibility to tell what I know. And I know that the Union uses canned kidney beans in its salads. This is okay for some people, but many of my readers are serious foodies who plan entire trips around where theyre going to eat; for them, Cysco-brand beans from a No. 10 can are unacceptable.
My pleasure, Albert. If you discover any hidden gems, let us all know! John
Bottom line: The real Napa Valley is all about down to earth people. But you wont meet any of them at the chi-chi resorts, or the name-dropping wineries. Itd be like going to Gucci in Beverly Hills we dare you to go there and not feel the snobby vibes!
Thanks for the great article!
RE: the snob factor were in the same camp as Steve: The REAL Napa Valley is farmers, field workers, and hard working winery folks we wouldnt call any of them snobs (well, maybe when theyre ribbing each other about one anothers wines, but thats different . . .

Thanks for your nice note! Indeed the Boonville General Store is a delicious find. Its my new favorite place to stop when passing through the valley. Im so glad to know that Ive helped in your exploration of California. I highly recommend you travel this month: March is the emerald month, and the entire state is green, with the exception of the snowy mountains. I just got back from a four-day trip, and the wildflowers are just starting to pop. Gorgeous.

Good work I agree with 99% of your content and 100% of your attitude!
I just saw a whale yesterday from Pigeon Point. It was far off shore, but man, oh man, how cool to see its giant tail lift into the air!
As for the Union, Im grateful for all the feedback from readers about this beloved institution. This kind of round-table discussion is exactly what this section is for. Keep the comments coming!
pretty decent write-up on a very beautiful area of northern california. however, its important not to confuse point reyes station with the point reyes national seashore when it comes to weather. while the point reyes national seashore coastline can certainly be foggy at times, the wonderful town of point reyes station as well as the many beaches along the bay enjoy the sunniest weather from pacifica to bodega bay.
Whale-watching from West Marin is best at Point Reyes. Heres what the park says about it:

Alternatively you could go directly to Mar Vista and skip the Pelican Inn, then add two nights way up north at the wonderful, if simple, Requa Inn, but its a five-hour drive. There are closer places, like Humboldt Redwoods, but the only worthwhile place to stay near the Avenue of the Giants is the Benbow Inn. But this is a different trip altogether.

Hi Doug,
The Apple Farm is lovely, especially when in bloom, and admirable. And you must urge people off Hwy 128 at the Philo-Greenwood Road to find it. Im just saying its not a fair fight: holistic philosophy in action vs. roadside fruit stand. Chez Panisse vs. El Tonayense.
Looking to make Incline my residence(I am in CA), and need a place which is near shopping-my wife does not drive-and not more than 2 floors. Help?
Oh, I just discovered a new delicious place for lunch or dinner.
Hi,John Vlahides
Lucky for me, I stumbled upon this site! I am trying to find the ideal place for my honeymoon this October. Were narrowing in on Carneros or Hotel Healdsburg. A preference between the two hotels/areas?
Theyre kids. What will they know? Go where you like, and it will leave a more lasting impression on the children My advice: Point Reyes. Find a place where you can hike the land by day, then play board games by the fire at night. Or go to Half Moon Bay and shop for Christmas ornaments in springtime, and have a strip mall if you need something. Read how Point Reyes was saved from development, and youll understand why its a no-brainer.
Thank you, Ryan. Im flattered! Regarding the hotels, I wove in details about their locations in the reviews so that people could choose where to stay based on what they wanted to do. If you expand the map at the top of the page and set it in hybrid mode, you get a zoomable, satellite Google Earth map.
I stumbled across your great site in my quest to google for information that might help my family plan our first California vacation with the kids (10 yo, 8 yo, 8 yo) in mid July.
I friggin love skiing at Mammoth. In my estimation, its got the best terrain in all California. I wanted to cover Mammoth Mountain in the NorCal guide, but were likely going to wait and put it with the soon–to-come LA guide, since it really is a SoCal mountain. As for Kirkwood, I agree: Kirkwood is to Mammoth, as marijuana is to cocainethe gateway drug. Kwood is my second-favorite place to ski because you can hike above the lifts and find awesome snow (when theres good coverage) that intermediates wont go near. Love those super-steeps!
Thanks for the wonderful website. I was able to use so much of this information to get a feel for what I was getting myself into when i brought a group of 9 friends to HMB, my first time back in 15 years! We kayaked (go hmbkayak company! awesome time), then hit barbaras for lunch and spent til early evening at half moon bay state beach. That was last weekend, and now Im taking my folks this weekend, and find myself at this site again!
Thanks for chiming in! See you on the road. John

Napa gets packed in summer: its hard to ditch the crowds. But there are some lesser-known wineries that would do the trick. My first choice is Ladera Vineyards, high on the flanks of Mt Veeder. Read my review on the Napa wineries page.
Heres what I recommend. Go to the North Coast, and stay close to Hwy 1 and Hwy 101. Forget about Tahoe. Its the Emerald Month in California, and up and down the state the hills are electric green. The wildflowers are starting to pop. Youll love it.
Will I return to the Union? You bet. Will I say when? No, because Id probably be shot on sight. Look for an updated review by the end of the monthbut I doubt that anything has changed much, which is exactly why some people love the Union, and some dont.
Keep in touch!
Hi Doug,
Hi Sarah,Check my guide to vacation rentals. There are several realtors listed there, as well as tips on what to look for in a rental house. Let me know if you need another push in the right direction. By the way, you are smart to book now. Youll surely find something perfect.John
And yes, there are indeed lakefront cabins (see my review, above). If you can swing the high price tag, theyre totally worth it!
Thanks for chiming in! See you on the road. John
You are so right in everything you sayespecially about the Mendocino Theatre Co. What a remarkable company. Thanks for checking in. Once youre back in town, if you have anything else to add, please do. I should be back in town sometime this fall. Cant wait. There really is no place like Mendocino. John
One small correctionalthough she has visited, Martha Stewart never purchased any property in Bolinas. It was all just an ugly rumor, thank goddess.
John, Your Review on the Union was RIGHT on. Good for you for reporting the truth!
So sorry for my long delay. Ive been in Europe for the past month. Regarding your inquiry, the Carneros Inn provides more overall privacy for a lovers retreat (book a vineyard-view cottage). The Hotel Healdsburg is better if you want to walk around and explore without having to driveand Healdsburg is the new gastronomic capital of Sonoma County; you eat really well here!
Ya know, I thought about including it, but their schedule is erratic, and I couldnt nail them down in time for my deadline. BUT, on the web you can make additions at a moments notice. So as soon as I can find out more info about the direction of the restaurant, Ill add it.
Thanks for the update, Mindy. I havent yet seen the inn, but on my next trip to Point Reyes, Ill check it out. Im always eager to find new places to write about!
Bye
A note: the Malabar and the cold-kitchen Asian Rose (same owner) both closed, but theres a little more upscale new Asian Rose on Front Street. Same inexpensive and delicious food, but its no longer the cafeteria-line style lunch service it was before.
Fair enough John. Ill be staying at the Heritage House next month for my one year wedding anniversary. Ive stayed in a number of GHM hotels and have always been impressed. Ill try to remember everything and give my impressions when I return.
Hello, John
Thats a quibble. Capturing regions in a few highly serviceable words is a million times harder than critiquing a fine point. Your guides are pithy and, where I roam a little, exquisitely selective, subtle, and acute. Im glad I found your work. Good luck.
I friggin love skiing at Mammoth. In my estimation, its got the best terrain in all California. I wanted to cover Mammoth Mountain in the NorCal guide, but were likely going to wait and put it with the soon–to-come LA guide, since it really is a SoCal mountain. Your post is a bit out of place here, but after seeing your photos, I decided to leave it up so others could check out your (beautiful) work. After all, this is a community site, with live information for travelers, and your stuff on Southeast Asia really captures a sense of place and ought to inspire wanderlust in others. And anything that reminds people of the joy of travel is all right by me. Will keep you posted if we need a photographer. JV
If all else fails, one word: tailoring. Good lines are everything. Hope that helps.
Hi, I live in Santa Cruz for college, and you are so right about campus. It has the most beautiful views, from many of the dorms too But Id also like to mention a couple of my favorite places for food.
Others:Silverado Resort (may have moderate rates; wouldnt hurt to check)Rancho Caymus Inn (in Rutherford, I think)
The question to answer is, how much driving do you really want to do on your honeymoon?
Does this help? If youve got other questions, let me know and Ill do what I can to help.
If your girlfriend has limited mobility, Carmel is more compact, but oh-so precious and fussy. Mendocino still embraces its hippie roots. The two towns are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Compare my introductory notes to Carmel (above) and to Mendocino.

I dont understand your full itinerary, and Im not seeing your other comment. What page is it on? If youre heading from SF on your way to Mar Vista, then hit the Anderson Valley on your first (or last) day by taking Hwy 101 north to Hwy 128, and stop in Boonville. Ive listed good wineries on the above page. Take a look.
Cheers,Abhishek.
Hey Joe,
Another small organic farm is Brock Farm which is two miles north of the town of Boonville. Watch for the Peachland Road turn off on your right going north.
As for house rentals, technically theyre not allowed in Big Sur. But you can ask realtors if they know of anyone who has any rental properties. I shouldnt say more than that. Plan ahead and youll have good luck, I think.
Id recommend a tasting at Pine Ridge Winery off of the Silverado Trail. The Rutherford Cab is killer. Also, check out Cult Wine Central, the tasting room for the Napa Wine Co., where you can sample some good stuff from the small winemakers that use the equipment there to produce their wines.
I like the Sonoma Creek Inn. Its rooms are cute as a button, and the rates are a terrific value. Only drawback is, youll have to drive anywhere you want to go. But the motel is well-positioned for jaunts to Sonoma Valley wineries. The best nearby hiking is in Glen Ellen at Jack London State Park.
Only one question when are you adding Vancouver to the list?
Right there you have 2 days of tasting with no snob factor and all within a couple square miles.
Me again. Am wondering how youve missed (perhaps intentionally? Hope not) Glendeven Inn, where well be spending a couple of nights in the Bill and Hillary room next week (John, one of the co-owners, says they dont really promote the fact that they stayed there, for obvious reasons!). Anyway, thought Id bring the place to your attention, although I have a feeling you know of its existence already. It sounds like it would be right up your alley.
Thanks, Larry. If you cant take a full weekend off, take an afternoon drive instead. March is the emerald month in California: nearly the whole state turns electric green for 30 days, then dust season begins and the hills turns brown again till next year. Surely you can blow off at least one afternoon this month! Go to West Marin. JV
Hi Tommy,
As for the union hotel, it has great food but you have to be the type of person who likes that type of food..i worked there for a year and would eat the left overs off peoples plates as i cleaned the tables ahahah..its that good..they may have canned kidney beans..but where do you get fresh kidney beans in sonoma county?they do have hand rolled raviolees, great pizza and hand made deserts..overalll id say its probbly the best restuarant in OCD.
Anyone know the differences between camping at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park versus Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park ? thanks.. .

Thanks for the note. As for post dates, we had a little glitch with the site that shifted dates around. Were working on it!
Hi Josh,
Great review!
I really like the Stanford Inn. The grounds are gorgeous, and they abut the mouth of Big River. You can bike to town on free bicycles (or walk), or rent a canoe or kayak on site and ride the incoming tide up the river. But you cant golf here. Rooms are more modern, spiffier, with more up-to-date furnishings. The sound-insulation is better tooan important consideration on a romantic weekend. And nearly every room has a fireplace. You can see the ocean over the trees, but youre a little further from it here than at Little River, so you wont hear it pounding on the rocks as loudly.
Keep the letters comingso long as youre not a shill.
Thanks for the tip about the River Inn. Ive been meaning to check it out, since I am eager to add some more midprice places to the Big Sur lineup. Will keep you posted. Meanwhile, if anyone else has opinions to add, feel free to chime in! John
So glad you dig the site. As for Vancouver and North Carolina, stay tuned. Well reveal more in the coming months, but for now suffice it to say that were building a national network and may even add Canada too. I love me some Canada!
BTW, I must take exception about the negative comments mentioned earlier about Clearlake. If one actually lives in and around the southern end of the lake, in particular Clearlake or Clearlake Park, as I have since 1998, I can say that the drug issue is no worse here than most other places.
Oooh, thats a tough one. Tahoe City dies at night. You could drop them off at the Village at Squaw Valley, where they could wander around, sit by a fire pit and potentially connect with other teens, but its shoulder season: hardly anyone is at Tahoe right now. In short, there isnt a lot for teens to do. I hope theres a basketball hoop and a couple of floodlights in the driveway of the rental. Sorry I cant be of more help.
Right there you have 2 days of tasting with no snob factor and all within a couple square miles.
Great site. Found you on Matt Mullenwegs WordPress blog.
If anyone else wants to eat there and report back, heres the location on Google Maps. Let us know what you think!
If you stay in the village of Mendocino, the best restaurant in the area is Rendezvous Inn (above), but youll have to drive to get there.
Thanks again.
The day trip to Carmel and Big Sur is l-o-n-g: Budget 16 hours. Ideally stay one night.
Thanks for the tips, Jen. I too like the hot-tub spas in Santa Cruz (locals call em soak-n-pokes; isnt that funny?). And youre right: the Well Within is the top pick for an inexpensiveand cleanspot for a soak.
Youre missing the best restaurant in town, my pub, Barley and Hops Tavern!
I really enjoyed reading this review and it is extremely comprehensive? just had one Q? would you recommend BIG SUR in the month of december or early jan?
Hey there, Rebecca
I enjoyed your descriptions of Occidental, and the surrounding area. The one part I had trouble with was the Union Hotels review. I live in Healdsburg, and I have been driving out to the Union Hotel in Occidental for twenty four years now with my family and friends. Each time I am greeted with a friendly smile, and a wonderful array of food. The pasta is one of my favorite meals, and I always recommend it!!

As for Cazadero, I know theres a lot buried in the woods up there, but Im going to first cover the Russian River proper, just to give people an idea of whats happening lately in Guerneville, Monte Rio, and Duncans Millsa lot has changed these past couple of years. What with everyone freaking out about the low flow of the river, and fighting about the re-direction of the Eel River into the Russian, I may devote all my coverage to those places immediately along its banks.
Hi Lynne,
I am from the San Francisco area and my girlfriend who had a knee operation and I are thinking Carmel or Mendicino. We are thinking mid April 2009. My girlfriend likes jacuzzis in the room. She likes to shop but also likes a good Manhatten and Seafood. We dont want to spend a fortune. I like Pinot and we have been to Elk in Mendocino and did enjoy Anderson Valley.
Jim, thanks for the correction. Although Martha may not live here, its worth stating that Susie Tompkins Buell, founder of Esprit clothing, does live in Bolinasand I know from a gate-crasher friend of mine that Susie throws some damn good parties.

Hi were looking for a 3-4 bedroom + pool summer rental home for mid August. Calistoga, or anywhere near Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley to Tahoe. Wed like something that is comfortable, doesnt need to be fancy, but is close to town/village for restaurants and walking around
RE: the snob factor were in the same camp as Steve: The REAL Napa Valley is farmers, field workers, and hard working winery folks we wouldnt call any of them snobs (well, maybe when theyre ribbing each other about one anothers wines, but thats different . . .
Thank you so much for your Big Sur info. I have been through Big Sur a lot as I have surfed and hiked there quite a bit when I lived in the Morro Bay area. But now I got married and am planning on driving up from LA to Cambria, staying a night, and then staying in Pfeiffer Bis Sur SP to camp the following night. I want my wife to see the beauty of the Big Sur area in a way she wont forget. I really want her to get into some Hot Springs but she is not as much of a hiker as me. I know Esalen has some (1 -3 am?) and there are some about an eight mile hike in, but where else can I get her into a Hot Spring? What hiking trails would you recommend that are maybe two miles but really nice? And how about the fire. Is the countryside still affected by it?
If you want to see old-growth trees, you could make the two-plus hour, one-way trek to Standish-Hickey State Reserve, but youll only see a few real giants. If you go that far, you may as well continue on to the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods, but its a minimum four-hour trip one-way. Why fuss?
Id suggest a hike on Sunday. Head to the top of Barker Pass Rd, a narrow, partially paved road that only locals know. The 7mi trip to the top takes you to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Though you can drive if you really want to, its best done on bicycles or on foot since there are hardly any cars on this hidden back road.
Best regards,John
Hey Ruben,Thanks for the suggestion. I googled this restaurant and see it on the map youre spot on with your improbably fantastic location. Ill have to check it out next time I meander up north.
It is self service with a little cash box for paying. The Brocks also visit all the local farmers markets in season.

Thanks, I knew the hotel was under construction, but didnt know it had opened. It looks quite schmancy, from what I can tell. I like the location, but wouldnt want a room not fronting on the water. Ill check it out next time Im down there. Thanks again for the heads-up!
Youve made a great case for staying in Calistoga! Indeed, the placement is excellent for exploring other areas of Wine Country.
Duarte’s Tavern was a bit of a letdown. I didn’t find the Artichoke Soup to be anything to write home about. But I did really like the burritto gas station. Best bet for those on a budget wanting to brush up on their Spanish.
Hi Peter,
Hi Lynne,
If youre not in a position to pay a consulting fee, my quick advice would be to look into the Rhône Rangers for Mataro (aka Mourvèdre). For Petite Syrah: head to the Russian River Valley, in Sonoma County. Zinafandel does great in Dry Creek Valley, north of Healdsburg. As for Sangiovese, Ill throw you a bone: I like Luna, in Napabut its not an appointment-only winery.

One last thing: What kind of wine do you like? If you have a favorite varietal (e.g., merlot, chardonnay), let me know and well come up with just the right spot.
By the way, do you know about Mar Vista Cottages on the Sonoma-Mendocino coast? Its my favorite place to stay in the entire state, and it allows dogs (by reservation only). JV

Regardless, I stand by my words about the snob factor: even if it is imported by outsiders, it still permeates the psychic space. As for overpriced tastings, I just wrote the new California guide for Lonely Planet and was disappointed to learn during research that some wineries that once returned tasting fees with a purchase no longer do so. Still others have gotten even more expensive and are setting new heights for outrageous pricing.

Interesting blog, look forward to more.
i think you should put more information about avalanches because people will want to know if youve had them when who died what happened because they will have to check if it is safe if them and their kidz will be alive when they go home. so i think it is just wright for us to know more about this or you could be responsible for alot of angry families .
Why dont you cover Fort Bragg in this? Its not charming like Mendocino, but its certainly the place to stay on the coast just above Mendocino if you cant afford Mendo. Theres also the wonderful Botanical Garden, as well as several good restaurants.
Your request is a tricky one because technically what you ask for is prohibited by law in Big Sur: rental properties arent legal. You can usually get away with a house-swap or something equally discrete, but a wedding? That will draw attention. Id suggest contacting, by telephone, the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce: (831) 667-2100. They may be able to help you figure out your options. But be patient. Theyre still dealing with (major) fallout from the recent fires. This may help you, though, since the economy is desperate for a big infusion of cashwhich is exactly what weddings bring. Talk to them. I bet theyll help.

Hi Rachel,
While I do like the Apple Farm a lot, its really not fair to use it as a reason to skip Gowans Orchard. Two different things. Gowans is a (big) fruit stand with an excellent seasonal selection, not a (slightly precious, but still great) hospitality destination. At Gowans youll find a dozen varieties of apples in season, local jams and preserves, their own dried fruit, apple cider and juice, etc. And mounds of gourds, squashes, and pumpkins to go with the apples in autumn. A border collie named Grizzly will lead you to his cache of tennis balls near the orchard (although hes getting pretty old, and one never knows if hell be there next time through).
Thanks again, Karen!
Im surprised you didnt mention the Heritage House. It has been renovated since being the spot where same time next year was filmed and is now an Adrian Zecha, GHM hotel.
We will be in San Francisco over the Thanksgiving weekend for a football game. We are planning to drive to Carmel area on Thanksgiving Day and want to eat a traditional meal. A nice view would be desirable. Can you make any suggestions?
I see it now and remember. Glad youre getting your ducks in a row. Sounds like a fantastic trip. Definitely hit Anderson Valley on your way back to the city. I bet youll love it. And congratulations! Theres no better place in my mind to celebrate love than Northern California. John
Explore Wine Country in one day. My best advice is to get an early start. As for the city, take the ferry to avoid traffic, but immediately get the hell out of Fishermans Wharf, if you want to see the real San Francisco.
Hi Michael,
Great site. I live right down the street from the PassionFish restaurant and noticed that your map has the location marked in Monterey, not Pacific Grove. Correct address just marked in the wrong city. Where you have it marked is about 2 miles away. You also may want to add Hula’s Island Grill and Tiki Bar which is about a block from the Bulldog Pub.
I am the General Manger of the recently-purchased and renovated Timber Cove Inn. After a 2.5 million upgrade, the raccoons have returned to nature, we have remodeled the rooms, and we have added hiking trails and an events lawn overlooking the spectacular Sonoma Coast.
The question to answer is, how much driving do you really want to do on your honeymoon?
thanks- karen

Hi, Kate. Thanks for your note. Im always grateful to learn that locals approve of my coverage. You guys are my toughest critics! (And Im flattered that you recognize my byline. What LP book do you have?)
If anyone else wants to eat there and report back, heres the location on Google Maps. Let us know what you think!
Now Im lusting over Napa. MUST go and see for myself (and take late-night hearthrob Twitter-guide with me, at least virtually!).
I agree that the walk along the coast from Lovers Point in Pacific Grove is not to be beat. Theres good places to explore the tide pools if you take the path all the way around the peninsula tip to the Asilomar side (or drive). Love the pure white sand at Asilomar beach.
Yes, it does. Thank you! Im glad you recommended Gundlach-Bundschu. It looks beautiful, at least from the photos Ive seen! Ill check out your other pages for more suggestions. And yes, I will make sure to avoid Fishermans Wharf that is unless I want a mediocre, over-priced meal!

Healdsburg looks like a very nice option though i am torn between Occidental and Sonoma too. Any suggestions on which is most romantic and where to stay in Healdsburg for a first anniversary?.

Hey John,I asked the question above and have plenty more, but the most pressing one at this point is if you have any recommendations near Mar Vista for vineyard/winery tours. Were staying at Mar Vista for three nights which basically gives us two full days and a half day on either end to explore the area. Im thinking a trip to Mendocino and Fort Bragg and well for sure explore some of the beaches and the lighthouse. Wed like to do a winery tour on our trip somewhere, but we dont want to take a chance and end up with a crappy tour. I think our other option would be to find a winery or two on our drive from the Pelican Inn up to Garberville so if you have any recommendations along that route Id appreciate those as well. Thanks, again.
Hi, Ted. Thanks for the props!
Thanks for your feedback. I agree: the Sharpsteen Museum merits a look. But I dont like Flatiron Grill; the bar is gorgeous, but the food sucks. I havent tried Bar Vino, but Im skeptical because its by the same owners. Personally theyre nice guys, but professionally they cut too many corners.
I lived in Santa Cruz for 14 years, up until last August.
Im planning a trip to wine country in mid-October and your site has been such a help thank you so much! Ill be there over some weekdays, so Im hoping that it wont be so crowded.

If you want a mellow float from Tahoe City down the Truckee River, contact Truckee River Raft Co. Its really easy, perfect if you want to float down the river while drinking beer. Expect to see lots of other rafts, most filled with families. If you want something harder that demands acumen (think Class III rapids), then contact Tributary Whitewater Tours, but it costs twice as much, about $70 per person.

Contrary to popular belief, the southern end of the lake is truly the most beautiful and most secure part of the lake. The upper part of the lake, particularly Upper Lake, Nice and Lakeport is just flat, the hills distant and small. County sheriffs spread thin and slow to respond. In contrast, the topography of the southern end of the lake is more intimate, embracing and enchanted. Lakeshore Dr. snakes around old inns of bygone days out towards Windflower Point, climbing up high terrain passing fine homes with million dollar views that track the full moonrise and sunrises from the east to the west, many with stunning vistas of Mt. Konocti as well. Cache Creek, the seven mile biyou to the dam is Clearlakes best kept secret and a must cruise or canoe in the fall.
One thing: To get from Stinson to Bolinas, youll have to hire a boat to cross the channel (or buy a dry bag at a camping store, and swim across. But check the tidal flow! Youll have to do it at ebb tide to avoid being sucked out to sea or forced into the lagoon). Or else walk along the lagoon on Hwy 1a long walk, with traffic whizzing by.
Hi John,Thank you very much for the helpful tips, especially the important point that renting from the resort allows for easier adjustments and exchanges. I may follow your advice and just ski for two out of the three days. In case we want to mix in a day of cross-country skiing, however, are there any spots near Tahoma Meadows that would be ideal? Im looking forward to the trip! Thanks again for all your help.
If you golf, choose Little River. If you want to dive into a big indoor heated pool, anytime of day or night, choose Stanford Inn.

So glad I found your site, John. As a Midwesterner I hope to Carmel solo in late Jan or Feb for three to four days of quiet to see and hear the ocean and stroll, eat, drink, and read. I want to return with my husband in July for the classical music festival. Before I sound too stodgy I should probably mention that I hate chintz, kids, floral patterns, teddy bears, hotel room noise. Any suggestions for either or both trips would be appreciated. Thanks, John.

I think our other option would be to find a winery or two on our drive from the Pelican Inn up to Garberville so if you have any recommendations along that route Id appreciate those as well. Thanks, again.
Id recommend it for anyone looking for a slightly different experience, if theyre willing to part easily with some money, but I personally wouldnt go again, unless I wasnt paying.
Awesome piece of info on your site, John. keep the good work up. I have planned my trip based on information I could find here. Will let you know if I discover more data points worth mentioning here.
Hi Luciano,
Thanks for tip Cecilia, we changed the link. Adam
Hi Jason,Thanks for admiring the editorial. When my friends want to take weekend trips, they inevitably call me to get suggestions. I wrote 71 Miles with them in mind, to provide the kind of smart information long-weekenders really want to knowthe details you usually only get from your friends. Glad you like it! John
Id be happy to provide a telephone consultation for a fee. Otherwise, nose around the site some more.

Good-oh on the new enterprise! And with roughly 6 million-plus potential readers in the greater Bay Area, I think youll have a large number of fans.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a developed campground, with 200+ sites for tents and RVs, and a couple of hike-in sites if you dont want to car camp. The advantage of camping here is in the amenities: showers, a store, flush toilets, and restaurant nearby. But damn, those screaming kids sure can get annoying. Wait till school is back in session.
Hi Michael,
P.S. As for easy hikes, perhaps:
Hi Clarissa,
Hi Scott,Indeed, these are very special properties. Ive referenced them above as rental cottages, under the Hotels House Rentals heading. Thanks for expanding on the details.Best,John
I have all faith that, in time, the will take its rightful place among the most beautiful spots in California. And the change is due in large part to engaged, active, passionate citizens such as you. Yay for local spirit! Clear Lake needs you!
Hi Mark,
What? I cant believe Sizzling Tandoor a fantastic (but grubby) Indian restaurant in an improbably fantastic location, overlooking a bend in the river and the Pacific wasnt mentioned. Sure, its not some snooty upscale fusion place, but thats precisely the charm. What could beat a delish saag paneer and naan comquered by a Kingfisher.
John, thank you again for your ever informative recomendations. Yes, the Anderson Valley is a beautiful place to visit, with much to offer those who want a quiet special place with a quirky local community. Finding lodging was a bit tricky but the beautiful drive alone was well worth it. As for the food, the Boonville General Store far exceeded my expectations for what I would find in the area. It is far more than a gourmet market, they have a fantastic poached egg breakfast with fresh handmade tortillas, their scone was hands down the best Ive ever had, and they claim to use all local organic ingridients, (the eggs were carried into the restaurant by a local farmer while I was eating). Furthermore, they are open everyday and, according to the remarkably welcomming and boisterous locals holding court, have the best pizza north of the Golden Gate.
I saw your show on The View todayand liked your descriptions of our magical coast. I know of many great places that only someone who has lived here for many years would know about. If you would like to know about them..see them..add the information to your website..you may contact me at the mail address I have given here. These places are prestine areas..outragious tidepools..virgin growth redwoods, beaches totally private..beauty. Again..your show was very enjoyable.Kristi Georgeson
Santa Cruz is definitely a fav day or weekend trip of mine, but there are a few highlights I would add to your description Well Within Spa for way cheap massages and privates tubs/saunas with your honey, fun wineries around SC like Bonny Doon (breaks up the drive), and a short walk through the monarch butterfly sanctuary near the Natural Bridges (in the right season, of course). A must for me used to be Malabar, a great Sri Lankan veg reataurant, but I hear that its closed now. Boo hoo.
Hi Robin,
Hi Jennifer,
But if you want to avoid traffic, dont drive too far north or south in Napa Valley. Stop at the Oakville Grocery for sandwiches and gourmet goodies, then hit one nearby winery. (See my Nap Wineries page for ideas; Plumpjack, Hall, Nickel and Nickel, Frogs Leap, or Darioush would all fit the bill. But make reservations!). Afterward, return back to Sonoma Valley via the same 20-minute-long, winding route you took over the hills; traffic on Hwy 29 in the town of Napa backs up every afternoon and should be avoided.
Keep the letters comingso long as youre not a shill.
Will I return to the Union? You bet. Will I say when? No, because Id probably be shot on sight. Look for an updated review by the end of the monthbut I doubt that anything has changed much, which is exactly why some people love the Union, and some dont.

Hi Jake,
(Please tell me that your letter is a fabulous prank. Really, it was delicious to read and perfectly makes my case about the Union Hotels kitchen. And the OCD closer? Brilliant! Thank you.)
Do you have any recommendations for wineries that also have a good restaurant on-site? I thought that might be one way to save some time and cut down on driving around so we can linger at one place longer, hopefully somewhere scenic with both good food and wine. Any recommendations?
As a fellow bibliophile, I suggest supporting your local independent bookseller. My fav for travel books is Get Lost on Market St.
pretty decent write-up on a very beautiful area of northern california. however, its important not to confuse point reyes station with the point reyes national seashore when it comes to weather. while the point reyes national seashore coastline can certainly be foggy at times, the wonderful town of point reyes station as well as the many beaches along the bay enjoy the sunniest weather from pacifica to bodega bay.
